Sloane earned the nickname Birdie when she was learning to eat solid food. And when it came to dressing up, her favorites weren’t princesses or fairies. They were Flash, Wonder Woman, and Superman.
Kate began sharing their family’s experience through Birdie’s Superheroes, a name inspired by her daughter’s love of costumes and her determination to meet each new challenge. Those early stories capture a childhood with real hardships, but also humor, courage, and so much life.

For Kate, one of the most unexpected parts of the journey was isolation, even while surrounded by friends and family. Navigating medically complex care brings an emotional weight that can be difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t lived it.
For Jay, even the darkest moments revealed the healing power of faith, the blessing of family, and the strength of community. Together, those experiences shaped a desire to help other families feel understood and supported.

Birdie’s Hope Foundation grew from that desire. Kate and Jay bring their professional experience and their lives as parents to a mission grounded in compassion: easing the financial and emotional burdens of families navigating tracheostomy care.
Through financial, emotional, and spiritual support, the foundation cares for the whole family. Because behind every medical journey are parents, siblings, and a child who deserves to be seen for more than a diagnosis.
